Shake off the spookiness (and some wiggles) with a classic—and one your crew will actually ask for every year. The Monster Mash Dance is simple, seasonal, and perfect for PreK through 2nd graders.
I found this video years ago on YouTube and I’ve been using it with my littles ever since! They seriously ask for it every year! We even did it on a program one year and it was a crowd favorite!
Do each of the moves for eight beats. In the video, you can see they turn to face different parts of the room. I don’t do this with the little ones, but 2nd grade could probably handle it! Repeat these steps over and over until the end of the song.
- Zombie- arms straight out in front of you stepping side to side
- Dracula- cover your face with your “cloak”
- Werewolf- drag your claws down on the left then the right
- Shake- shake your booty (here is where they turn, but I skip that part)
- Swim with your arms
- Twist your left leg
- Swim with your arms
- Twist with your right leg
🎃 Why It’s a Lifesaver
This activity is no-prep, high engagement, and hits multiple goals at once. Students get to move, follow a rhythmic pattern, and practice coordination—all while thinking they’re just dancing to a silly Halloween song. You don’t need any instruments, props, or fancy tech. Just hit play, give a quick demo, and let the spooky fun begin.
👻 Add Your Own Flair
Once they’ve got the routine down, don’t be afraid to make it your own. You can pause the music for a quick freeze moment, let students invent their own spooky moves, or even have a few of them lead the dance for the class. It’s a great way to let them be creative while still working within a structured, musical activity.
